CASE HISTORY

The Association of Train Operating Companies

The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) is an unincorporated association owned by its members. It was set up by the Train Operating Companies after railway privatisation.

As well as being the official voice of the passenger rail industry, it also provides its members with a range of services that enable them to comply with conditions laid on them in their franchise agreements and operating licenses.

We have carried out several projects for ATOC, including those outlined below.

Strategic Review of the One Day Travelcard

Carried out the marketing audit for a major review of the one day Travelcard and associated products. The work covered collating and analysing existing data and research relating to the one day Travelcard, interviewing Train Operating Companies about the products, and jointly formulating the subsequent stages of the review.

London Travelcard Pricing Strategies

The project evaluated a range of pricing strategies for the in-boundary Travelcard. All TOCs were consulted to establish their individual views on pricing, and to find out what was considered important to their companies on this and associated matters.A model was then created to compare and contrast nine different strategies on the major areas of interest. Conclusions were then drawn, together with suggestions for further research.

Accurate and Impartial Ticket Retailing

We currently advise ATOC on the design and analysis of Mystery Shopper Surveys, which are carried out at over 700 stations across the UK. Their purpose is to provide statistically valid measures of the level of Accurate and Impartial Retailing. The output from the work is used to produce a performance league by Train Operating Company.
