Chiltern Railways
Chiltern Railways is one of the UK's leading operators of passenger rail services. Over several years we have helped them on various projects.
Auditing Demand Growth and Modal Share
The Chiltern Railways' peak demand had risen by 14% in the year prior to our appointment. Chiltern felt that it was essential to understand why this was happening, so that they could manage it and make sure they could provide sufficient trains, car parks and other facilities. They therefore asked us to determine the sources of this growth, and comment on its sustainability for the future.
The project involved devising a new methodology to break the demand down into a number of clearly defined areas, including population growth and changes in local and Central London employment patterns. Other factors taken into account were abstraction from other TOCs and passengers changing to rail from car, particularly due to the effect of long term road works in Chiltern's catchment area.
We correlated information from a number of diverse sources such as Local Authorities, and CAPRI ticket sales data. From this and other information we were able to determine the sources of the growth. With the aid of wide ranging forecasts the consultants were then able to comment on the continuance and maintenance of the growth.
Advice on Pricing Strategy
As part of a more general contract, we advised Chiltern Railways on their pricing strategy for January 1999. Our advice included analysis of their fares basket, and the revenue effects of different fares strategies taking into account elasticity estimates.
